Education & Training

We’re working with schools, students, and local communities to share skills and inspire the next generation of environmental champions

Ranger Training at Sophia Point

Led by Guyanese Specialist Wildlife Biologist Waldyke “Wally” Prince, Ranger Training at Sophia Point is a hands-on, immersive programme designed to build the skills, knowledge, and experience of Sophia Point staff and local community members. Rangers play one of the most important roles at Sophia Point—guiding and supporting vital work in the rainforest and on the river.

This training equips participants to safely lead and assist both Guyanese and international students and researchers in the field. Trainee rangers learn core principles of ecological monitoring, health and safety protocols, and field logistics. The programme also explores the integration of traditional knowledge with modern scientific discoveries, creating a uniquely grounded and respectful approach to conservation.

Whether deep in the forest or navigating the river, trained rangers are essential to the success of Sophia Point’s research and education mission.

Youth Environment Programmes

As part of our Champion of the Rainforest Youth Environment Program, students from the neighbouring Rivers View community explored the rainforest alongside our dedicated rangers, learning about the ecology of rainforests, their importance, and the incredible biodiversity.

We have also had the pleasure of hosting nature camps for the Karrau Village Environment Club. Camps include hands-on activities like setting up camera traps, trail walks through the rainforest, and bird watching – all while building a deeper connection with nature.

Sophia Point is an accessible space for young people from local communities to come together to learn about the rainforest, dive into wildlife conservation, and explore the incredible biodiversity of this amazing ecosystem.
