Connecting with Future Scientists: Sophia Point at University of Guyana Open Day
And other February 2025 updates…
Sophia Point was excited to participate in the University of Guyana Open Day, engaging with students from the university as well as high school pupils who attended the event. It was a fantastic opportunity to connect with the next generation of Guyanese scientists, sharing our work in rainforest research and conservation.
We enjoyed inspiring conversations and hope to welcome many of these bright young minds to Sophia Point in the future, where they can gain hands-on experience and deepen their passion for science and the environment.
A big thank you to Dr. Paloma Martin, Vice Chancellor of the University of Guyana, for making the day such a great success and facilitating Sophia Point’s involvement. We look forward to continued collaboration and inspiring more students in the years ahead!
Trustee Visit: Dr. Ewan Birney at Sophia Point
We were honoured to welcome Dr. Ewan Birney, Trustee of Sophia Point and leading scientist in genomics, for a special visit to the centre. During his time at Sophia Point, Ewan learned about our work on rainforest research, education, and conservation, and provided valuable guidance on the scientific direction of our programmes.
In addition to his visit to the field site, Ewan also delivered an engaging lecture at the University of Guyana on the use of AI in genomics, sparking exciting conversations about the future of science and technology in biodiversity research.
We’re grateful for his insight and support, and look forward to continuing to grow Sophia Point as a hub for cutting-edge, locally grounded science.
