Forest Climate Leaders Visit Sophia Point
And other May 2025 updates…
In May 2025, Sophia Point Rainforest Research Centre was honoured to host a delegation from the Forest Climate Leadership Partnership. The visit brought together officials from the Governments of Guyana, Brazil, the United Kingdom, and the Congo—key countries working collaboratively on global forest and climate solutions.
The delegation received a brief presentation on Sophia Point’s mission and ongoing work in rainforest research, education, and conservation. This was followed by a short forest walk with our dedicated Sophia Point Rangers, where guests had the chance to see camera traps in action and observe some of the field research being carried out on site.
It was a privilege to share our work with such an influential group and to showcase how field-based science is supporting rainforest protection and climate resilience in Guyana.
Supporting Sustainable Village Development: National Toshaos Council Conference 2025
In May 2025, Sophia Point proudly acknowledged the importance of the National Toshaos Council (NTC) Conference, held under the theme “Robust Governance for Sustainable Village Development.” This annual gathering brought together Indigenous leaders from across the country to discuss critical issues and opportunities for the advancement of their communities.
The conference, hosted at the Arthur Chung Conference Centre (ACCC), featured a national exhibition where agencies like the Guyana Energy Agency (GEA) showcased ongoing efforts to expand renewable energy solutions. These initiatives are transforming lives in hinterland and riverine areas, powering homes, schools, health centres, and village offices with clean, reliable electricity.
We were especially proud to see our local village Toshao, Gregory Williams of Riverview, and Senior Councillor Romel Braithwaite representing Riverview and Falmouth. Their participation underscores the importance of Indigenous leadership in shaping sustainable futures for Amerindian communities. This event serves as a vital platform for collaboration and progress, and we’re honoured to stand in support.
